Our approach is to teach Hebrew as a living language starting with our youngest children. Our pre-school students are exposed to Hebrew through multiple modalities whether it is listening. Singing, using tactile toys, making delicious treats or learning the secrets of symbolic objects like the lulav and etrog. Our students learn to think in Hebrew, not merely translate. This provides them with the building blocks of language, allowing then to communicate both quickly and effectively. Our students are encouraged to take linguistic risks, allowing them to acquire language skills more rapidly. Jewish culture and Israel are central to our sturdy language. We utilize the aural/oral approach with a strong foundation in reading, writing, spelling and the composition of thoughtful essays. Due to our multi tracked Hebrew program, students can enter at any grade, even if they have not had any exposure to the language.
Jewish Studies at SMMIS reflects our entire approach to academics. By being woven throughout our curriculum, general studies, art and music it enables our students to gain a heightened consciousness of their Jewish heritage, culture, values, ethics and traditions making them relevant to their everyday lives. They study the Bible, Jewish holidays, Jewish history and the history of Israel in a dynamic approach that includes games, play, dance and song. This highly innovative approach demonstrates to our students that Jewish ethics and history are related in significant ways to world history, science, mathematics, literature and the arts.
